Acholi Language Services in the UK

About Our Acholi Services

Acholi is a Western Nilotic language of the Luo group, spoken mainly in northern Uganda in the area around Gulu and Kitgum known as Acholiland, and across the border in parts of South Sudan. Estimates put speaker numbers at around 1.5 million, though figures vary. It is closely related to Lango and Alur in Uganda and more distantly to Dholuo in Kenya, with a fair degree of mutual understanding among neighbouring Luo varieties. Acholi is tonal, so pitch helps distinguish word meanings, and it is written in the Latin alphabet. The language carries a strong oral tradition of songs, proverbs and storytelling. English is Uganda's official language and many Acholi speakers are bilingual, but Acholi remains the language of home, local radio and church across the north of the country.

Prism Linguistics provides Acholi translation, interpreting and transcription across the UK in 300+ languages. Whether you need a certified document for the Home Office, a court interpreter, an NHS appointment or a business meeting, our vetted native-speaker linguists are ready to help.
