Plain-English answers

Translation & interpreting terms, explained

The terms UK buyers ask us about most often — in one sentence each.

What is interpreting?
Interpreting is the conversion of spoken language in real time — face-to-face, by phone or by video.
What is translation?
Translation is the conversion of written text from one language into another — documents, websites, marketing material.
What is certified translation in the UK?
A certified translation is a translation accompanied by a signed declaration from the translation provider, accepted by the UK Home Office, UKVI, HMCTS, HMPO and UK universities. There is no UK "sworn translator" register; certification is provided by a reputable translation company.
What is localisation?
Localisation is translation plus cultural and technical adaptation for a target market — date formats, currencies, units, idioms, imagery, UI strings.
What is simultaneous interpreting?
Interpreting delivered at the same time as the speaker, usually from a soundproof booth, used at conferences. Pairs of interpreters rotate every 20-30 minutes.
What is consecutive interpreting?
Interpreting delivered after the speaker pauses, in short bursts. Used in legal, medical and small-group meetings.
What is SDH?
SDH (Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing) includes spoken dialogue plus non-verbal audio cues (e.g. [door closing]). Ofcom-compliant SDH is required for most UK broadcast.
What is the four-eyes principle?
The four-eyes principle (also known as two-linguist review) is the industry standard for professional translation quality: the first translator works exclusively into their mother tongue, then a second qualified linguist independently reviews the translation for accuracy, terminology and consistency before delivery. We apply this on every project.
How it works

From enquiry to delivery

The same process applies whether you’re booking a one-hour NHS interpreter or a 200-page certified translation.

  1. 1

    Identify the service type

Spoken language → interpreting. Written language → translation. Audio or video output → transcription/subtitling. Full market adaptation → localisation.

  2. 2

    Flag compliance requirements

Tell us if the output must be certified for Home Office/UKVI/HMCTS, or if the interpreter must be DBS-checked, NRPSI-registered or NRCPD-registered.

  3. 3

    Request a free quote

Use the online quote form or call +44 (0) 20 3880 6688. A UK project manager replies within 1 working hour with pricing, timeline and compliance notes.

  4. 4

    Approve and we begin

We assign a native-speaker linguist with the right specialism. Every translation goes through second-linguist QA before delivery; certified hardcopies are posted via tracked Royal Mail.

FAQ

Common questions about our services

The same questions are marked up in FAQPage schema for AI search engines.

What's the difference between translation and interpreting?
Translation deals with written language; interpreting deals with spoken language in real time. A document goes to a translator. A medical appointment or court hearing goes to an interpreter. Prism Linguistics provides both, in 300+ languages.
When do I need certified translation in the UK?
Certified translation is required by the UK Home Office, UKVI, HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS), HM Passport Office (HMPO) and most UK universities when accepting a non-English document. Our certified translations come with a signed declaration of accuracy and can be posted in hardcopy via tracked Royal Mail.
Do you provide DBS-checked interpreters?
Yes. Interpreters assigned to NHS, court, police, council safeguarding and school work hold a valid Enhanced DBS certificate. We document interpreter qualifications and DBS status for every booking on request.
What languages do you cover?
300+ languages and dialects across every Prism service. We specialise in rare African and Asian languages — Herero, Dinka, Nuer, Susu, Zaghawa, Kinyarwanda, Tigrinya and others — where the UK pool of qualified linguists is very small.
How quickly can you deliver?
Telephone interpreting is available 24/7 in 300+ languages. Face-to-face interpreting in major UK cities can usually be arranged within 2–4 hours. Standard certified translations are typically delivered in 24–48 hours; urgent options are available.
How do you ensure translation quality?
Every translation we deliver goes through the four-eyes principle: the first translator works exclusively into their mother tongue, then a second qualified linguist independently reviews the translation for accuracy, terminology and consistency before delivery. Our linguists have documented subject-matter experience (legal, medical, technical, financial) and our information handling is UK GDPR compliant.
