Armenian occupies its own branch of the Indo-European family and is the official language of Armenia. Its distinctive alphabet was created around 405 AD by the monk Mesrop Mashtots and is still in daily use, now with 39 letters. The language has two modern standards: Eastern Armenian, spoken in Armenia and by communities in Iran, and Western Armenian, the heritage language of the diaspora descended from communities in Anatolia, now found in Lebanon, Syria, France and the Americas. UNESCO lists Western Armenian as endangered. Worldwide speaker estimates hover around six million, with far more people of Armenian descent than active speakers. The two standards differ in pronunciation and some grammar, but they share the alphabet and a literary tradition reaching back to the fifth century.
