Assyrian, more precisely Assyrian Neo-Aramaic, is a modern Semitic language descended from Aramaic, the old lingua franca of the ancient Near East. It is spoken by Assyrian Christian communities whose homeland spans northern Iraq, northwestern Iran, northeastern Syria and southeastern Turkey, though decades of conflict have scattered many speakers into a worldwide diaspora. The language is traditionally written in the Syriac script and remains central to Assyrian church life. Estimates of speaker numbers vary, but several hundred thousand people are thought to use it today. It is distinct from Arabic and Kurdish, the majority languages that surround it, and also from the extinct Akkadian of the ancient Assyrian Empire, despite the shared name. Assyrian communities now live across Europe, North America and Australia, including in Britain.
