Azeri is the name often used for Azerbaijani, particularly for the language as spoken in Iran. More Azeri speakers are thought to live in Iran than in the Republic of Azerbaijan itself: estimates for Iranian Azerbaijan, the region around Tabriz, Urmia and Ardabil, vary a great deal but commonly start at ten million and run higher. In Iran the language is written in a modified Perso-Arabic script and has no official status, since Persian is the language of the state and of schooling, yet Azeri thrives in homes, bazaars, music and local broadcasting. Linguists call these varieties South Azerbaijani; they differ from the northern standard in pronunciation and some vocabulary but remain mutually intelligible with it, and with Turkish to a fair degree. Azeri belongs to the Oghuz branch of the Turkic family.
