Baluchi, also spelled Balochi, is a Northwestern Iranian language of the Indo-European family. Its heartland is Balochistan, a region divided between Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan, and sizeable communities also live in Oman and the Gulf states. Speaker estimates vary but often fall between eight and ten million, the majority in Pakistan. Linguists commonly group the dialects into Eastern, Western and Southern Baluchi, the last including the Makrani speech of the coast. The language is usually written in a modified Perso-Arabic script, though spelling conventions are not fully standardised. Baluchi has a celebrated oral literature of ballads and heroic poetry passed down by professional reciters, and radio services in Pakistan and Iran broadcast in it, even though schooling in the region is mostly in Urdu or Persian.
