Bangla Language Services in the UK

About Our Bangla Services

Bangla is the name Bengalis themselves use for their language, and it is the state language of Bangladesh. The language carries unusual political weight there: the Language Movement of 1952, in which students in Dhaka were killed defending the status of Bangla, is commemorated every 21 February, a date UNESCO later adopted as International Mother Language Day. Bangla is an Indo-Aryan language written in its own script, which runs left to right beneath a distinctive headline stroke. Within Bangladesh, regional speech varies a great deal; Sylheti and Chittagonian differ so much from the standard that many linguists count them as separate languages. That matters in Britain, where much of the large British Bangladeshi community traces its roots to Sylhet and speaks Sylheti at home rather than standard Bangla.

Prism Linguistics provides Bangla translation, interpreting and transcription across the UK in 300+ languages. Whether you need a certified document for the Home Office, a court interpreter, an NHS appointment or a business meeting, our vetted native-speaker linguists are ready to help.
