Behdini (Badini) is a northern subdialect of Kurmanji Kurdish, spoken mainly in the Duhok region of Iraqi Kurdistan and adjacent parts of south-eastern Turkey. Kurds are among the more established Middle Eastern communities in the UK, numbering around 94,000, with the largest concentration in London and further clusters in the West Midlands, Yorkshire and the North West, in cities like Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds and Glasgow. Iraqi Kurds are the largest group, so Behdini features regularly in our work. Most of it is asylum and immigration documentation for the Home Office and the tribunals, civil certificates for settlement applications, and interpreting for the NHS, solicitors and courts. Kurmanji Kurdish is spoken by roughly 17 million people worldwide.
