Its literary tradition is formidable: Rabindranath Tagore, who wrote in Bengali, became the first non-European Nobel laureate in Literature in 1913, and the national anthems of both India and Bangladesh come from his pen. Kolkata remains a centre of Bengali publishing and film. Spoken Bengali varies considerably by region, with the modern standard based on the educated speech of the Nadia district.
