Berber, known to its speakers as Tamazight, is not one language but a family of closely related Afroasiatic languages spoken by the Amazigh people across North Africa. The main varieties include Tashelhit, Central Atlas Tamazight and Tarifit in Morocco, Kabyle and Chaoui in Algeria, and the Tuareg varieties of the Sahara in Mali and Niger. Combined speaker estimates run to tens of millions, with the largest concentrations in Morocco and Algeria; both countries have made Tamazight an official language, Morocco in 2011 and Algeria in 2016. Berber has its own ancient writing system, Tifinagh, revived in modern form for official use in Morocco, though the Latin and Arabic scripts are also widely used. The Berber languages predate the arrival of Arabic in North Africa, and many speakers are bilingual in Arabic or French.
