Bikol, often written Bicol, is an Austronesian language group from the Bicol Region at the south-eastern end of Luzon in the Philippines. Central Bikol, sometimes called Bikol Naga, is the most widely spoken variety and functions as the regional standard; Rinconada Bikol and the Albay Bikol group are among the other recognised varieties. Taken together the Bikol languages have several million speakers, with Central Bikol alone accounting for an estimated two to three million. The language is written in the Latin alphabet and shares much of its core grammar and vocabulary with other Philippine languages such as Tagalog and Cebuano, though the Bikol varieties differ enough among themselves that speakers from different provinces do not always understand one another easily. Filipino and English are used alongside Bikol in schools and government.
