About Durness
Durness is a remote village on the north-west coast of the Highlands, in Sutherland, around 120 miles from Inverness and part of the most sparsely populated region in western Europe. Fewer than four hundred people live here, and there is no court, hospital or university anywhere near. Formal matters are handled at a distance, through the Highland sheriff courts and NHS Highland, whose main hospital, Raigmore, is in Inverness. Burushaski is a language isolate, unrelated to any other known language, spoken by the Burusho people of the Hunza and Nagar valleys in northern Pakistan. Although the UK has a large Pakistani community, Burushaski speakers within it are very few and form no distinct group of their own. Work in Burushaski is therefore occasional and mostly follows from asylum and immigration claims: personal and civil documents for the Home Office and UKVI, the odd tribunal paper, and credential evaluation through UK ENIC. Burushaski has around 130,000 speakers, almost all in northern Pakistan.
