Cakchiquel, more often spelt Kaqchikel today, is a Mayan language of the highlands of central Guatemala, spoken in the departments around Lake Atitlan and the old capital Antigua. It belongs to the Quichean branch of the Mayan family, which makes it a close relative of K'iche' and Tz'utujil, and speakers of these neighbouring languages can often follow one another to a degree. An estimated half a million people speak Kaqchikel, most of them bilingual in Spanish. The language is written in the Latin alphabet using a standardised orthography agreed through the Academy of Mayan Languages of Guatemala. Like other Mayan languages it survived centuries of pressure from Spanish, and it is now taught in some Guatemalan schools, though everyday use varies a good deal from town to town.
