A Romance language descended from Latin, it emerged in the medieval Kingdom of Castile and spread across the peninsula and then, from the sixteenth century, through the Americas. Spanish as a whole now has around 480 million native speakers, making it one of the most spoken languages on earth. Within Spain, Castilian pronunciation is known for a 'th' sound in words spelled with z or soft c, a feature most Latin American varieties lack. The language is written in the Latin alphabet and its standard form is maintained by the Real Academia Espanola, founded in 1713.
