Chaochow, more commonly romanised as Teochew or Chiuchow, is a Southern Min Chinese variety from the Chaoshan region of eastern Guangdong province, taking in the cities of Chaozhou, Shantou and Jieyang. It is tonal and written with Chinese characters, but it is not mutually intelligible with Mandarin or Cantonese. Estimates of speaker numbers commonly run to ten million or more once the large diaspora is counted. Teochew emigration over the past two centuries created substantial speech communities in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia and Vietnam, as well as in Hong Kong, and Teochew speakers are present in Chinese communities in Europe and North America. Within the Chaoshan region itself, local accents differ noticeably from city to city.
