The name Chin covers a group of related Tibeto-Burman languages spoken by the Chin peoples of western Myanmar, chiefly in Chin State, and across the border in the Indian states of Mizoram and Manipur and in parts of Bangladesh. Hakha Chin, also called Lai, functions as a lingua franca in and around the state capital Hakha; Falam and Tedim are among the other widely spoken varieties. These are distinct languages rather than dialects of one tongue, and speakers of different Chin languages often cannot understand one another. Most are written in the Latin alphabet, introduced by missionaries from the late nineteenth century. Refugee resettlement since the 2000s has established Chin-speaking communities in the United States, Australia and Europe.
