Chinese belongs to the Sino-Tibetan family and is better described as a group of related varieties than a single spoken language. Mandarin, the standard form, is the official language of China and Taiwan and one of the official languages of Singapore, with well over a billion speakers once second-language users are counted. Other major varieties include Cantonese, Shanghainese, Hokkien and Hakka, which differ enough in speech to be mutually unintelligible. All share the Chinese character script: simplified characters are used in mainland China and Singapore, traditional characters in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. In the UK, both Mandarin and Cantonese are widely spoken, each with substantial communities recorded in the 2021 Census for England and Wales.
