Chuukese belongs to the Micronesian branch of the Austronesian family and is the main language of Chuuk State in the Federated States of Micronesia. Estimates put the number of speakers at around 50,000, including communities that have settled in Guam, Hawaii and the mainland United States. The language is written in the Latin alphabet, and Chuukese materials are used in local schooling alongside English, which serves as the national official language. Chuukese forms part of a chain of closely related lagoon and outer-island varieties, and speakers of neighbouring Micronesian languages can often follow some of it. Word structure is complex, with possessive endings that change depending on the type of thing being possessed, a feature typical of Micronesian languages.
