Corsican is a Romance language spoken on the Mediterranean island of Corsica, which has been part of France since the eighteenth century. Linguists group it closely with the Italian dialects of Tuscany, and Italian speakers generally find it recognisable. French is the island's official language, but Corsican holds recognised regional-language status, appears on bilingual road signs and is taught in schools and at the University of Corsica in Corte. UNESCO lists it as endangered, and speaker estimates are uncertain; a common figure is somewhere around 100,000, with many more islanders having partial knowledge. The language varies noticeably between the north and the south of the island, and related varieties are spoken in northern Sardinia. Corsican is written in the Latin alphabet.
