Cree Language Services in the UK

About Our Cree Services

Cree is an Algonquian language, or more accurately a chain of closely related dialects, spoken across a vast stretch of Canada from Alberta to Quebec and Labrador. The main dialect groups include Plains Cree, Woods Cree, Swampy Cree, Moose Cree and East Cree; neighbouring dialects are mutually intelligible, but those at opposite ends of the chain are not. Speaker estimates vary, though most fall below 100,000, which still makes Cree one of the most widely spoken Indigenous languages in Canada. It is written both in Canadian Aboriginal syllabics, developed in the nineteenth century, and in the Latin alphabet, with usage differing by community. School programmes and community initiatives across the Prairie provinces and northern Quebec support the language's transmission to younger generations.

Prism Linguistics provides Cree translation, interpreting and transcription across the UK in 300+ languages. Whether you need a certified document for the Home Office, a court interpreter, an NHS appointment or a business meeting, our vetted native-speaker linguists are ready to help.
