Crioulo usually refers to Cape Verdean Creole, the Portuguese-based creole spoken throughout Cape Verde, an island nation off the West African coast. It developed from contact between Portuguese and West African languages during the islands' settlement from the fifteenth century onward. Every island has its own variety; the broad split is between the Sotavento dialects of the south, including the Santiago speech known as Badiu, and the Barlavento dialects of the north, such as that of Sao Vicente. Portuguese remains the official language of government and schooling, while Crioulo is the everyday speech of virtually all Cape Verdeans. Counting the large diaspora in Portugal, the United States, France and the Netherlands, speakers are estimated at around a million.
