The Damara people of Namibia speak Khoekhoegowab, often called Khoekhoe or Nama-Damara, the same language spoken by the Nama people. It belongs to the Khoe family, not to the Bantu group that accounts for most languages in southern Africa, and it is known for its click consonants, marked in the standard Latin-based orthography with special symbols. Estimates put speakers at around 200,000, most of them in Namibia, with smaller Nama-speaking communities in Botswana and South Africa. Khoekhoegowab is one of Namibia's recognised national languages: it is taught in schools, examined at secondary level and studied at the University of Namibia. It is also tonal, with pitch distinguishing otherwise identical words, and it stands among the most widely spoken click languages outside the Bantu family.
