Djerma, more often written Zarma, is a Songhay language spoken mainly in southwestern Niger, including the capital Niamey, where it serves as a major language of trade and daily life. An estimated three million or more people speak it, making it one of Niger's most widely used languages after Hausa. Zarma belongs to the Songhay family, a group of languages spoken along the Niger River whose wider classification linguists still debate. It is closely related to the Songhay varieties of Mali and to Dendi, spoken in northern Benin. The language carries a strong oral tradition of storytelling and praise poetry. Where it is written, the Latin alphabet is used, and Zarma features in Nigerien radio broadcasting and literacy programmes.
