Dogri Language Services in the UK

About Our Dogri Services

Dogri is an Indo-Aryan language of northern India, spoken mainly in the Jammu region of Jammu and Kashmir and in neighbouring parts of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. The 2011 Indian census recorded around 2.6 million speakers. It is closely related to Punjabi and, unusually for an Indo-Aryan language, it is tonal. Dogri was historically written in Dogra Akkhar, a script of the Takri family promoted by the Dogra rulers of Jammu, but Devanagari is the standard today. In 2003 Dogri was added to the Eighth Schedule of the Indian constitution, giving it official recognition, and it is used in literature, radio and school teaching across the Jammu region. India's national academy of letters, the Sahitya Akademi, gives annual awards for writing in Dogri.
