Dutch is a West Germanic language with around 24 million native speakers. It is the official language of the Netherlands and one of the three official languages of Belgium, where the variety spoken in Flanders is commonly called Flemish, though it is the same standard language. Dutch is also official in Suriname and in the Caribbean territories of Aruba, Curacao and Sint Maarten. Afrikaans, spoken in South Africa and Namibia, developed from seventeenth-century Dutch and remains partly mutually intelligible with it. The language is written in the Latin alphabet, and its standard form is overseen by the Dutch Language Union, a treaty body covering the Netherlands, Belgium and Suriname. Dialects vary considerably, from Limburgish in the south-east to the Low Saxon varieties of the north-east.
