Farsi is the Persian name for the Persian language, a member of the Iranian branch of the Indo-European family and the official language of Iran. Closely related standard varieties are spoken in Afghanistan, where the language is called Dari, and in Tajikistan, where Tajik is written in Cyrillic; in Iran and Afghanistan the Perso-Arabic script is used. Taken together, the three varieties have well over 100 million speakers, with around 80 million in Iran alone. Persian has a celebrated literary history stretching back over a thousand years, including the poets Ferdowsi, Rumi and Hafez, whose work is still read and quoted daily. The UK has a substantial Persian-speaking community, with Iranian and Afghan populations concentrated particularly in London.
