Fijian Hindi Language Services in the UK

About Our Fijian Hindi Services

Fiji Hindi, also called Fijian Hindi or Fiji Baat, developed among Indian indentured labourers taken to Fiji between 1879 and 1916. It grew as a koine, blending the Awadhi and Bhojpuri dialects the labourers brought from northern India, and it has since absorbed words from Fijian and English. The language is the everyday speech of Indo-Fijians, who make up a large share of Fiji's population, and Fiji's 2013 constitution recognises it, under the name Fiji Hindi, alongside English and the iTaukei language. It differs markedly from Standard Hindi in grammar and vocabulary, enough that speakers of one can find the other hard going; Standard Hindi is still used in Fiji for worship, formal occasions and some broadcasting. Fiji Hindi is mainly spoken, written when needed in either Devanagari or the Latin alphabet.
