Flemish is the everyday name for Dutch as spoken in Flanders, the northern half of Belgium. Officially the language of Flanders is simply Dutch: Belgium and the Netherlands share one written standard, overseen jointly by the Dutch Language Union. Around 6.5 million Belgians speak it. What sets Flemish apart is mainly sound and word choice. Pronunciation is generally softer than in the Netherlands, some vocabulary differs, and Flemish speakers commonly use the pronoun "ge" or "gij" where the Dutch would say "je". Between dialect and standard sits an informal spoken register Belgians call tussentaal, or in-between language, common on Flemish television. Belgium's other official languages are French and German, and the border between Dutch-speaking Flanders and French-speaking Wallonia is a defining line in the country's public life.
