The Fuzhou dialect, sometimes romanised as Foochow, is the main variety of Eastern Min Chinese, spoken in and around Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian province, and along the province's eastern coast. It is also the speech of the Matsu Islands, administered by Taiwan. Estimates put speakers at roughly ten million. Fuzhounese is not mutually intelligible with Mandarin, and despite the shared province it is also distinct from Hokkien, the Southern Min language of Fujian's south. Among linguists the dialect is known for its complex tone sandhi and for consonant changes in connected speech. Large-scale emigration from the Fuzhou region since the 1980s has planted substantial Fuzhounese-speaking communities overseas, notably in New York, and the language is increasingly heard among newer Chinese communities in Britain. It is written with Chinese characters.
