Garifuna is an Arawakan language of the Caribbean coast of Central America, spoken by the Garifuna people of Honduras, Belize, Guatemala and Nicaragua, with a large diaspora in the United States. There is essentially no Garifuna-speaking community in the UK; the few speakers here belong to the wider Central American and Caribbean diaspora rather than any settled group. Our Garifuna work is limited and occasional, mostly asylum and immigration documentation for the Home Office and the tribunals, civil certificates such as birth and marriage records for settlement applications, and academic records assessed by UK ENIC for credential evaluation. An interpreter can be sourced for a hearing or NHS appointment where one is needed. Around 120,000 people speak Garifuna worldwide.
