Written German uses the Latin alphabet with three umlauted vowels and the eszett character. The standard language, often called Hochdeutsch, sits above a wide spread of regional dialects, from Bavarian and Swabian in the south to Low German varieties near the North Sea, while Swiss German differs enough from the standard that many Germans struggle to follow it. German nouns take one of three genders and four cases, and the language famously allows long compound words built from several nouns joined together.
