Greenlandic, known to its speakers as Kalaallisut, is the official language of Greenland and the only Inuit language with full official status anywhere. It belongs to the Eskimo-Aleut family and is spoken by around 50,000 people, most of Greenland's population. The standard is based on the West Greenlandic dialect; East Greenlandic and the Thule dialect of the far north differ enough that speakers sometimes struggle across dialect lines. Greenlandic is well known among linguists for its polysynthetic structure, in which a single long word can carry the meaning of an entire English sentence. It is written in the Latin alphabet. Danish remains widely used in Greenland, a legacy of colonial rule, and most Greenlanders are bilingual. Smaller numbers of speakers live in Denmark.
Prism Linguistics provides Greenlandic translation, interpreting and transcription across the UK in 300+ languages. Whether you need a certified document for the Home Office, a court interpreter, an NHS appointment or a business meeting, our vetted native-speaker linguists are ready to help.
