Guarani is an indigenous South American language of the Tupi-Guarani family and one of the two official languages of Paraguay, alongside Spanish. Unusually for an indigenous language of the Americas, it is spoken by the majority of Paraguay's population, most of whom are not themselves indigenous; estimates commonly run to five or six million speakers. Many Paraguayans switch between Guarani and Spanish or speak Jopara, an everyday mix of the two. The language is also spoken by communities in parts of Argentina, Bolivia and Brazil, and it holds official status in Argentina's Corrientes province and in Bolivia. Guarani is written in the Latin alphabet and is used in schools, media and public life across Paraguay.
