Hindi is an Indo-Aryan language and, alongside English, one of the two official languages of India's central government. It is written in the Devanagari script, which runs left to right beneath a distinctive horizontal headline. Around 340 million people speak Hindi as a first language, and estimates that include second-language speakers pass 600 million, placing it among the world's most spoken languages. Hindi and Urdu share a common grammatical base, often called Hindustani, and are largely mutually intelligible in everyday speech, though they diverge in script and formal vocabulary; Standard Hindi draws its higher vocabulary from Sanskrit. Related languages and regional varieties span the so-called Hindi belt of northern India. Hindi is also spoken in Fiji, Mauritius and the UK, where census figures place it among the most spoken South Asian languages.
