About Our Hmong Services

Hmong is spoken by the Hmong people of the mountains of southern China, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand, and by large refugee-descended communities in the United States, French Guiana and Australia. It belongs to the Hmong-Mien family and is strongly tonal. The two main varieties are Hmong Daw, known as White Hmong, and Mong Leng, or Green Mong; the two are largely mutually intelligible. Most writing uses the Romanized Popular Alphabet devised in the 1950s, though an indigenous script called Pahawh Hmong also exists. Speaker estimates vary with how the varieties are counted, but several million people speak Hmong worldwide. The American community, concentrated in Minnesota, Wisconsin and California, numbers in the hundreds of thousands.
