Ibanag is an Austronesian language of the northern Philippines, spoken mainly in the provinces of Cagayan and Isabela on Luzon, particularly around the cities of Tuguegarao and Ilagan. Estimates of speaker numbers generally sit around half a million. The name derives from bannag, the local word for river, reflecting the language's historical concentration along the Cagayan River. Ibanag belongs to the Philippine branch of the Austronesian family and is related to neighbouring languages such as Ilocano, which has displaced it in some districts; Ilocano and Filipino are now widely used alongside it. It is written in the Latin alphabet, and Spanish missionary grammars and catechisms from the colonial period provide some of its earliest written records.
