Ibo Language Services in the UK

About Our Ibo Services

The name Ibo is an older English spelling of Igbo, a major language of south-eastern Nigeria belonging to the Niger-Congo family. It is a tonal language, so pitch distinguishes word meanings, and it is written in the Latin alphabet using the Onwu orthography adopted in 1961. Igbo ranks among Nigeria's most widely spoken languages, with estimates commonly around 30 million speakers or more across states such as Anambra, Imo, Enugu, Abia and Ebonyi. Dialect variation is considerable; the speech of Onitsha and Owerri differs noticeably, and a compromise Standard Igbo is used in broadcasting and education. Nigerian communities in Britain, particularly in London, include many Igbo speakers. English remains Nigeria's official language, with Igbo recognised as one of the major national languages.
