Igbo is one of Nigeria's three most widely spoken languages, alongside Hausa and Yoruba, and the principal language of the south-east of the country. It belongs to the Niger-Congo family, is strongly tonal, and is written in the Latin alphabet with additional marked letters. Speaker estimates vary a good deal, but figures of 30 million or more are commonly cited. Dialect variation is wide, and a compromise form known as Standard Igbo is used in education and broadcasting. There is a long literary connection too; Chinua Achebe, though he wrote mainly in English, drew heavily on Igbo proverbs and idiom. Sizeable Igbo-speaking communities exist outside Nigeria, including in the UK, particularly in London.
