Ilocano is an Austronesian language of the northern Philippines, the traditional language of the Ilocos region of Luzon. It ranks among the most spoken native languages of the country, generally placed third after Tagalog and Cebuano, with an estimated eight to ten million native speakers and more who use it as a regional lingua franca across northern Luzon. Written in the Latin alphabet, Ilocano has a literary tradition that includes the folk epic Biag ni Lam-ang. Migration has carried the language well beyond the Philippines: Hawaii in particular has a large Ilocano-speaking community, and speakers are found in Filipino communities across North America, the Gulf states and the UK.
