Kabye, also spelt Kabiye, is a Gur language of the Niger-Congo family spoken in northern Togo, particularly around the town of Kara, with smaller numbers of speakers in Benin and Ghana. It is one of Togo's two national languages, alongside Ewe, and appears in Togolese schooling and broadcasting in that role. Around a million people speak it, many of them also using Ewe, French or both, since French is the country's official language. Kabye is a tonal language written in the Latin alphabet with additional characters, and a standard orthography is used in schools and in published materials. The Kabiye people are the second largest ethnic group in Togo, and migration for work has carried the language to towns throughout the country, especially the capital, Lome.
