Q'anjob'al, often written Kanjobal, is a Mayan language of the Cuchumatanes highlands in Huehuetenango department, western Guatemala, centred on towns such as Santa Eulalia and San Juan Ixcoy. Guatemala recognises it as one of the country's Mayan languages, and it is written in a standardised Latin-based alphabet overseen by the Academy of Mayan Languages of Guatemala. Speaker numbers are generally estimated at well over 100,000. Migration driven by the civil war of the 1980s, and by economic pressure since, has created substantial Q'anjob'al-speaking communities in Mexico and the United States, notably in California and Florida. It is closely related to the neighbouring Mayan languages Akateko and Popti', also called Jakalteko, but distinct from the larger K'iche' and Mam.
