Kannada is a Dravidian language and the official language of Karnataka in southern India, spoken in Bengaluru, Mysuru and across the state. Native speakers number around 45 million, with millions more using it as a second language within Karnataka. Kannada has its own script, descended from ancient Brahmi, in which each character carries a consonant and vowel together. Its literary record stretches back well over a thousand years, and in 2008 the Indian government granted Kannada classical language status in recognition of that history. The language shows marked regional variation between coastal, northern and southern Karnataka, and it sits alongside Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam as one of the four major Dravidian literary languages.
