Kaonda, usually spelt Kaonde, is a Bantu language of Zambia, spoken mainly in the country's North-Western Province and in adjoining areas of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is one of the seven Zambian languages given official regional status for use in education, broadcasting and public information, alongside Bemba, Nyanja, Tonga, Lozi, Lunda and Luvale. Like other Bantu languages, Kaonde builds words with a system of noun classes marked by prefixes, and verbs carry much of the grammatical information in a sentence. It is written in the Latin alphabet, and radio programmes and school materials are produced in it. Speaker figures vary between sources, so estimates are best treated cautiously, but it is firmly established as one of Zambia's principal community languages.
Prism Linguistics provides Kaonda translation, interpreting and transcription across the UK in 300+ languages. Whether you need a certified document for the Home Office, a court interpreter, an NHS appointment or a business meeting, our vetted native-speaker linguists are ready to help.
