Khmer Cambodian Language Services in the UK

About Our Khmer Cambodian Services

Khmer is the official language of Cambodia, spoken by an estimated 16 million people there, with long-established communities of speakers in southern Vietnam, known as Khmer Krom, and in northeastern Thailand. It is the best known member of the Austroasiatic family. Unlike Thai, Lao and Vietnamese, Khmer is not a tonal language. Its script, among the oldest in Southeast Asia, developed from the Pallava writing of southern India and is notable for its large inventory of letters. Centuries of Hindu and Buddhist influence left the vocabulary full of borrowings from Sanskrit and Pali, and formal registers differ sharply from everyday speech; there is even a distinct vocabulary used when speaking of royalty and clergy. Standard Khmer is based on the speech of Phnom Penh.

Prism Linguistics provides Khmer Cambodian translation, interpreting and transcription across the UK in 300+ languages. Whether you need a certified document for the Home Office, a court interpreter, an NHS appointment or a business meeting, our vetted native-speaker linguists are ready to help.
