Kikongo is spoken by the Congolese community in Britain, which grew strongly through asylum and settlement from the Democratic Republic of the Congo: the 2021 census recorded around 29,000 DRC-born residents in England, with the largest numbers in London, especially Hackney. Our Kikongo work is mostly civil documentation for Home Office and UKVI asylum, settlement and citizenship cases, immigration tribunal papers, and birth and marriage certificates, along with academic records assessed by UK ENIC and interpreting at asylum interviews, NHS clinics and court hearings. Kikongo also gave rise to the trade creole Kituba, still widely used in the region. Around seven million people speak Kikongo as a first language across the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of Congo and Angola.
