Kikuyu, or Gikuyu, is a Bantu language spoken in the central highlands of Kenya, around Mount Kenya and in the counties north of Nairobi. The Kikuyu are Kenya's largest ethnic group, and the language has an estimated six to eight million speakers, nearly all of whom also speak Swahili, English or both. Kikuyu is tonal and is written in the Latin alphabet; a written tradition goes back to mission publishing in the early twentieth century, and the novelist Ngugi wa Thiong'o famously switched from English to writing in Gikuyu. Vernacular radio stations broadcast in Kikuyu across central Kenya. The language has recognised regional varieties, with differences between northern and southern speech, though these do not block understanding between speakers from different districts.
Prism Linguistics provides Kikuyu translation, interpreting and transcription across the UK in 300+ languages. Whether you need a certified document for the Home Office, a court interpreter, an NHS appointment or a business meeting, our vetted native-speaker linguists are ready to help.
