Face-to-face, phone or video in Lerwick

For short, urgent conversations in Lerwick (a GP receptionist call, a doorstep statement, an emergency department triage), telephone Kingwana interpreting is on demand and connects within minutes. For longer or more sensitive appointments (a contested hearing, a mental-health assessment, a customer meeting), face-to-face in Lerwick is worth the extra time it takes to confirm. Video works well when the parties are in different places but eye contact still matters.

How long it takes to confirm in Lerwick

Telephone Kingwana is on demand. Face-to-face appointments in Lerwick can usually be confirmed within a few hours. Less common Kingwana dialects benefit from a day or two's notice; that's normally enough to get you the strongest interpreter rather than the only available one.

How to book or hire a Kingwana interpreter in Lerwick

Send us the date, the venue and the type of appointment. We come back with the interpreter and a price (usually within the hour during UK office hours), and once you confirm, the linguist works the assignment. Pay-as-you-go, monthly invoicing, or to a PO if your accounts team need that.

English to Kingwana interpreter (and the other way round) in Lerwick

Our Kingwana interpreters in Lerwick work in both directions, consecutively (most appointments) or simultaneously where the setting calls for it. For events with equipment requirements, such as booths and headsets, let us know at quote stage so we can scope the kit and the interpreter team size correctly.

Kingwana interpreting in Lerwick: FAQs

How much does a Kingwana interpreter cost in Lerwick?

Cost depends on the language, the type of appointment, how long it is and how much notice you can give. There isn't a single hourly figure that's honest across NHS, legal and private work in Lerwick. Send the basics through the quote form and we'll come back with a price.

How do you pick the right interpreter for my Lerwick appointment?

We match on three things: subject experience (an NHS booking goes to a Kingwana interpreter who has worked in NHS settings, not just any interpreter), Kingwana dialect, and availability for your time and place in Lerwick. If you have a preferred linguist from a previous job, we'll try them first.

Can you cover urgent / same-day Kingwana requests in Lerwick?

Telephone Kingwana is on demand. For face-to-face in Lerwick, same-day is often possible for the more common languages; for less common dialects, give us a day's notice if you can and we'll get you the right person.

About Lerwick

Lerwick is the main town of Shetland, the northernmost town in the United Kingdom, and it has its own Sheriff Court dealing with criminal and civil work from across the islands, with the most serious cases referred to the High Court of Justiciary on the mainland. The Gilbert Bain Hospital provides the islands' main hospital care, and Shetland College, part of the University of the Highlands and Islands, brings students into the town. Fishing, aquaculture and the energy industry also draw workers from overseas. Shetland's language heritage is Norse rather than Gaelic: the old tongue was Norn, and today people speak English and Scots with a strong Shetland dialect. The translation and interpreting work we are asked for tends to follow the fishing and energy workforce and individual court or medical cases, often involving Eastern European or other less widely spoken languages. That is where we come in, supplying the rarer languages that smaller agencies struggle to cover.

About the Kingwana language

Kingwana is the Congolese form of Swahili spoken in eastern DR Congo, and it reaches Britain through the Congolese community, which the 2021 census put at around 29,000 people born in the DRC, concentrated in London boroughs such as Haringey, Newham, Southwark and Greenwich. Much of this community arrived through the asylum system, and that shapes our work: interpreting for Home Office interviews and immigration and asylum tribunals, and translating identity and civil-status documents supporting settlement and asylum claims. Standard Swahili often serves in writing, so the demand is mainly spoken. Congo Swahili is used by roughly 11 million people across eastern DR Congo, most of them as a second language.
