Kingwana is the Congolese form of Swahili spoken in eastern DR Congo, and it reaches Britain through the Congolese community, which the 2021 census put at around 29,000 people born in the DRC, concentrated in London boroughs such as Haringey, Newham, Southwark and Greenwich. Much of this community arrived through the asylum system, and that shapes our work: interpreting for Home Office interviews and immigration and asylum tribunals, and translating identity and civil-status documents supporting settlement and asylum claims. Standard Swahili often serves in writing, so the demand is mainly spoken. Congo Swahili is used by roughly 11 million people across eastern DR Congo, most of them as a second language.
