Kurmanji Interpreting Services in Farnborough

Kurmanji is the most widely spoken form of Kurdish, and many adults who speak it fluently were never taught to read it at school. Turkey passed a law in 1983 banning publications in Kurdish, and its repeal in 1991 still left Kurdish out of the school system. In Syria, Kurdish was barred from the classroom under the Assads. So a Kurmanji speaker in Farnborough may have done all of their schooling in Turkish or Arabic, and handing them a leaflet in written Kurmanji does not always help.

That history is why a good deal of our Kurmanji interpreting is sight translation as well as conversation. The interpreter reads a consent form, a tenancy agreement or a Home Office letter aloud in Kurmanji, then carries the client's questions back into English.

Most Kurmanji speakers we work with come from south-east Turkey, the Kurdish north of Syria or the Badini-speaking area around Duhok in northern Iraq. Yazidis belong here too, since Kurmanji is their everyday and ceremonial language; in August 2023 the UK government formally recognised that Islamic State committed genocide against the Yazidis in 2014. The 2021 Census does not count Kurmanji on its own: its Kurdish row, 66,443 usual residents of England and Wales, puts Kurmanji, Sorani and the other varieties together.

All of our Kurmanji interpreters are professionally qualified and background-checked; settings that demand Enhanced DBS clearance get an interpreter who has it. They interpret English to Kurmanji and Kurmanji to English, consecutively in almost every booking.

Farnborough Kurmanji Interpreters

In our experience Kurmanji interpreters are fewer than Turkish or Arabic ones, and they are not spread evenly across the country. For in-person Kurmanji interpreting services in Farnborough we look for someone close by whose background suits the client, and we tell you at quote stage if the best match has further to travel. Telephone and video bookings can draw on any Kurmanji interpreter we work with, wherever they live.

Background means more than the country on a passport. A speaker who grew up in Turkey may reach for Turkish words mid-sentence, while one from Syria or Iraq may reach for Arabic, and an interpreter who knows both habits misses less. With Yazidi clients we also ask whether they would rather the interpreter came from inside or outside their own community. In a small community people may know one another, and that can make a frank account harder to give.

Court Qualified Kurmanji Interpreters in Farnborough

Most Kurmanji hearing work sits in the First-tier Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber), though family, magistrates', county and Crown Court cases also book a Kurmanji court interpreter from us. Evidence is interpreted in full and in the first person, with nothing tidied up. If a witness slips into Turkish or Arabic halfway through an answer, the interpreter tells the judge rather than quietly carrying on.

Send the court, hearing type, listing and where the witness grew up, plus the names of the parties so we can check our interpreter has no link to the family, and we will name the interpreter before the day. You are free to check anyone we send; the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting and a place on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters are the two credentials people ask about most. Prism Linguistics is a private language-services provider and does not present itself as a court-appointed supplier.

Kurmanji NHS and Medical Interpreters in Farnborough

Trauma care is where Kurmanji NHS interpreting asks the most of an interpreter. A Yazidi woman who lived through the 2014 attacks on Sinjar may be referred for psychological therapy, and the interpreter then becomes part of that therapy for months. We provide a Kurmanji medical interpreter in Farnborough for:

  • trauma-focused therapy, psychiatric assessment and community mental health team reviews
  • GP appointments, medication reviews and practice nurse checks
  • pregnancy care, from the booking appointment to the postnatal check
  • children's clinics, developmental reviews and health visitor contact
  • specialist outpatients, test results and planning for discharge

For therapy we brief the interpreter beforehand and keep the same person for the whole course where we can. When a woman is likely to disclose violence, we offer a female Kurmanji NHS interpreter without waiting to be asked.

Kurmanji Interpreter for Home Office and Immigration Appointments

Asylum is the heart of Kurmanji immigration work: screening and substantive interviews, statement-taking with immigration solicitors, medico-legal report appointments and appeals. Syrian cases were held up: the Home Office paused all Syrian asylum interviews and decisions in December 2024, along with settlement applications from people resettled under the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme, and resumed only in July 2025. Some Syrian Kurdish clients have cases that are only now moving. Ask one thing before you book: was the client interviewed in Turkish or Arabic earlier in the claim? If they would now rather speak Kurmanji, raise it with the Home Office or the tribunal, and tell us.

Kurmanji Interpreters for Police, Councils and Public Services

Officers book Kurmanji interpreters through us for interviews under caution, custody reviews and statements from victims and witnesses. Council requests lean towards children's services, such as age assessments, child protection meetings and school admissions, with housing and homelessness interviews alongside. When a setting needs a particular level of vetting, we put forward only interpreters who already hold it.

Face-to-Face Kurmanji Interpreter in Farnborough

A Kurmanji interpreter sitting beside the client is worth the travel when someone is telling a hard story for the first time. A substantive asylum interview. A first therapy session. A child protection conference where a parent is frightened of what the social worker will say. For these, a professional Kurmanji interpreter comes to your premises in Farnborough, briefed on the purpose of the meeting and on any documents to be read aloud. A week's notice suits a long appointment; a day or two is often enough.

Telephone and Video Kurmanji Interpreting

Short Kurmanji conversations rarely need anyone to travel. Telephone interpreting puts a Kurmanji telephone interpreter on a three-way call for a pharmacy question, a school absence call or a query about asylum support. Video interpreting lets the client see who is speaking for them, which helps when trust is fragile. A Kurmanji video interpreter can be hundreds of miles from Farnborough and the session works just as well.

How Much Does a Kurmanji Interpreter Cost in Farnborough?

Kurmanji interpreting in Farnborough is priced per booking. What moves the figure is how long the appointment runs, attendance or remote, travel, notice and the kind of work. A full-day appeal is priced differently from a twenty-minute GP call. Put those details into the quote form and you will receive a fixed price, normally within the hour during UK office hours. Telephone and video cost less, since nobody travels.

How to Book a Kurmanji Interpreter in Farnborough

  1. Send the appointment details. Date, time, the address in Farnborough or a video link, how long it should last and what it is for. Add where the client comes from (Turkey, Syria or the Badini-speaking north of Iraq) and whether any documents will need reading aloud.
  2. Receive a fixed quote and the interpreter's name. We confirm the cost, check the interpreter is free and, for in-person work, tell you who is coming. If you need a female interpreter, this is the moment to say.
  3. Say yes and leave the briefing to us. Your interpreter receives the address, the purpose of the appointment and anything sensitive they ought to know. Private clients pay by card; solicitors, NHS services and local authorities can settle on invoice or against a purchase order.

About Farnborough

Farnborough sits in the Rushmoor district of north-east Hampshire, best known for its aviation history and airshow. Most of the work that reaches us here comes through its hospital, colleges and the surrounding courts. Frimley Park Hospital, run by the Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, serves north-east Hampshire and west Surrey, while serious cases go to the Crown Court and first hearings are dealt with at magistrates' courts in the area. Farnborough College of Technology and its university centre bring in students from across the region. The town and its neighbours have a long-established Nepali community, tied to the Gurkha connection with nearby Aldershot, so Nepali is asked for regularly here. Other South Asian and European languages come up too. We are also called on for the rarer languages a single hearing or medical appointment can hinge on, and those are usually the requests other agencies struggle to fill.

Kurmanji Interpreter Farnborough FAQs

How quickly can you provide a Kurmanji interpreter in Farnborough?

A Kurmanji interpreter by telephone or video is normally available the same day, frequently inside the hour. For someone to attend in Farnborough, next working day is often realistic, and extra notice widens the choice, particularly if you need a woman or a Badini speaker.

Are your Kurmanji interpreters qualified for court and tribunal work?

Kurmanji court and tribunal hearings are covered by court-experienced interpreters, and asylum appeals are where most of that work happens. You can ask any interpreter about the DPSI or a listing on the NRPSI. Prism Linguistics is a private company, not a court-appointed one.

Do you provide Kurmanji interpreters for NHS appointments in Farnborough?

Yes, surgeries, hospital clinics, maternity teams and mental health services in Farnborough book Kurmanji interpreters through us, face to face or remotely, and can pay on invoice. For a course of therapy we aim to keep the same interpreter at every session.

Can I book a same-day Kurmanji interpreter?

A same-day Kurmanji interpreter is usually possible by telephone or video. Getting someone to you in person today rests on the hour of the appointment and who is free near Farnborough, so phone first thing for a straight answer.

Can I request a female Kurmanji interpreter?

Yes, you can request a female Kurmanji interpreter, and women describing sexual violence or attending maternity and gynaecology care often do. Mention it at booking and we will secure one before confirming anything else.

Is Badini the same as Kurmanji?

Badini is the Kurmanji spoken around Duhok in northern Iraq and in Hakkari province in Turkey, so a Kurmanji interpreter can normally work with a Badini speaker. Mention it anyway: in Iraq, Badini is written in Arabic script rather than the Latin Hawar alphabet, which matters when documents are read aloud.

About the Kurmanji Language

Kurmanji, or Northern Kurdish, is the most widely spoken form of Kurdish, used mainly in south-east Turkey, northern Syria, northern Iraq and parts of Iran, and it is the everyday and ceremonial language of the Yazidis. In Turkey and Syria it is written in the Latin-based Hawar alphabet, which Celadet Bedirxan introduced in 1932 through his magazine Hawar; Badini, the Kurmanji of the Duhok area, is written in Arabic script instead. Kurmanji is not interchangeable with Sorani, the Central Kurdish of much of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and western Iran. The grammar differs as well as the vocabulary, so a Sorani booking should not go to a Kurmanji interpreter, or the other way round.
