Latin American Spanish covers the varieties of Spanish spoken across the Americas, from Mexico down to Argentina and Chile, by roughly 400 million people. All descend from the Spanish carried across the Atlantic from the late fifteenth century, but five hundred years of separate development have produced clear regional differences. Nearly all of Latin America uses seseo, pronouncing the letters c and z as s rather than with the th sound of central Spain, and much of the region, notably Argentina, Uruguay and parts of Central America, uses vos instead of tu for informal address, a feature known as voseo. Vocabulary absorbed from indigenous languages such as Nahuatl and Quechua gave Spanish words like chocolate and condor. Mexican, Rioplatense, Caribbean and Andean Spanish each have a recognisable accent, yet the written language remains essentially uniform, and speakers from any two countries understand one another without difficulty.
